Hi, I'm Joe

Same order at every shop: an iced mocha latte

A Coffee Shop Guide Built One Iced Mocha at a Time

My love for coffee started with early mornings, long workdays, and plenty of time traveling. Somewhere along the way I found my order, an iced mocha latte, and it became a reason to explore. Every new city started the same way: find the independent coffee shop worth the stop.

Mocha Joe is the coffee guide that came out of that. It is a directory of independent coffee shops you can browse by state and by city, with one city pick in each place I have actually been, coffee crawls that string the good ones together into a route, and honest notes on what to order when you get there.

Everything here is built to save you the hour I used to spend asking locals and reading reviews. If your favourite shop is missing, add a shop and I will go drink an iced mocha in it.

In Person Only

Nothing gets picked from a screen. A shop only appears in my notes after I have stood in it, waited in the line, and drunk what they made me. If I have not been, it is in the directory as a listing and nothing more.

One Order Everywhere

I order the same drink in every shop, an iced mocha latte. It is the only way I can compare a cafe in Oceanside to one in Missoula fairly: same drink, same expectations, and the difference is the shop rather than the recipe.

One Pick Per City

Each city gets exactly one pick. Not a top five, not a shortlist. If a second shop is better than the current pick, it takes the spot and the old one keeps its listing, a pick is only worth reading if it costs something to give.

Independent First

Picks go to independent shops. Chains can appear in the directory, because a directory that hides them is lying about what is on the street, but a chain never wins a city, however good the espresso is that morning.
